New Book on Philadelphia’s Love of Water - The Fountains of Philadelphia
From time to time, we at the Water Works Interpretive Center will share with our webpage readers books, films, and events which expand our perspectives on the World of Water. One such book has just been published: Fountains of Philadelphia: A Guide by Jim McClelland. Philadelphia has been called The City of Fountains (just like Rome). Indeed, fountains were part of Philadelphia's early water system. They atomized the city air with " the uncommonly pure" waters of the Schuylkill River, balancing the good and bad humors, and protecting public health. Here for the first time is a guide book devoted exclusively to the city's diverse array of these stylish and elegant works of art. Background details on each fountain's history and design are accompanied by lovely full-color photographs. This book offers a novel way of exploring and appreciating a great American city by showcasing its remarkable collection of fountains. It is available at a book store near you. Meet author Jim McClelland, and attend a slide lecture on October 22nd from 2-4 pm! Join us at the Interpretive Centter for a fascinating slide lecture, given by author Jim McClelland. Jim will delve into each fountain's history, design, and architectural significance. A reception and book signing follows. Fountains of Philadelphia: A Guide will also be available for purchase.
